Campaigns

Every so often, when I publish an article I mention one of the campaigns I'm in or a campaign I run, so rather than leaving them as vague, I figured I can explain them out pretty well here so you can take some elements you like and so you can better understand some of my points.

Current Campaigns

Spotless Sunset Campaign

This campaign takes place in a fictional land. It is a 3.5e campaign where I am a Killoren Scout named Jax. The main mission so far is to seek out Orbs of Dragonkind for a museum curator so they can better be protected in his well-fortified museum. During our search for these orbs, the party has come across a kingdom that is ruled by a council of leaders that has an orb, but does not want to give it to us to protect. The captain of the guard was offered to be the king of the region, but rejected the position. The captain explains that an event called the Ritual of the Spotless Sunset was once attempted, but was thwarted before it could be finished. Three items are needed to perform this ritual and the actual ritual is supposed to create a cataclysmic event that would destroy the sun itself. The King of the region seems to be fascinated by this concept which has led to a general distrust of him, but with nothing to back up total avoidance, we deemed it best to assist him and gain some favor with him as we can. The group has collected an Orb of Dragonkind and is in the process of returning another, but the campaign is very shrouded in mystery of who can be trusted and what should be done to prevent a cataclysmic event.

Previous Campaigns

First Player Experience

This campaign was my first introduction to D&D altogether. It was a 3.5e campaign where I played as a Human Cleric named Adotilon Shieldheart (yay for WoTC character name generators). He was a tank-Cleric that wore full-plate, had a tower shield, and used a morningstar most of the time. I don't recall much from this campaign other than a few major events. I recall that one of my first encounters was attacking a bandit camp that had a minotaur in search of something. I also recall a long session where we had to traverse into a cavern with trapped stairs so every now and then some spears would shoot from the wall and at the bottom of the stairs we had to do a specific set of steps to resurrect a party member who had been killed by a Nightmare (horse monster not dream). Ultimately this campaign ended short, but was fun, plus we played weekly in the basement of our dorm so we had that lovely creepy dungeon atmosphere.

Forgotten Realms College Campaign

This campaign took place over the course of 2.5 years. It was also a 3.5e campaign when I played as a Lumi Cleric named Svante. This campaign is the most prevalent one in my mind because it took place over such a long timeframe. We as a party were collecting items for a gang-like organization in order to help their leader have a chance to ascend to god status. This party had an interesting dynamic to it where we had a few roleplaying relevant inter-party conflicts that resulted in PCs dying. My character and a sorcerer were the only 2 characters believed to have survived through the entire campaign. We as a party had to go to each of the gods of Faerun to ask them to join us in fighting off a bunch of devils/demons led by another god. While some easily agreed, a few gave us tasks to complete, one of which required me to change dieties, which angered my previous diety, but they had already said they wouldn't fight. Ultimately, the battle took place on a fortress island with devils busting though the walls and out troops from dieties being mostly wiped out where we had to evacuate the island through an underwater passage. Unfortunately, we never got past this point, but in talking with the DM, if we succeeded the counter-attack we would be rewarded greatly and my cleric would be the high-cleric of the new deity our leader would become.

Redland Campaign

Taking place in the fictional location of the Redlands, I, a Human Paragon 3/Favored Soul 9 named Takaya Sakaki that ultimately met his demise when a dread wraith drained his constitution (CON) to zero on a critical hit. Takaya was replaced by a Halfling Paladin named Metomen Weaver. The campaign had our party traveling around the region to discover what happened with 2 brothers who were meant to rule the kingdom. Our journey took us to a ruined library where Takaya met his demise. In the library we found books that explained a little of the history of the royal family, and a book that could give us a little insight into what sort of creature lived in the mountains near the capital that has caused many people to stay away from the capital. The campaign ended abruptly when one party member's availability stalled the campaign leading to the start of the Small Group Campaign above.

Mini Group Campaign

This "group" started initially between my Junior-year of college as my first time DM'ing with a small group. The party was 3 characters, a Barbarian Lizardfolk, a Human Artificer, and a Chaos Gnome Sorcerer. I ran that campaign for a couple months and then we got to summer and it stopped since we all lived far away. The campaign resumed with just the Lizardfolk the next year and that made the DMing experience interesting because you developed a storyline for one person. Eventually we expanded that campaign with another person (a druid) and the dynamic changed a little more planning for 2 very different characters that could support each other well. Ultimately this campaign returned to 3 people as an online campaign for a couple weeks when the Artificer rejoined the party. The storyline was that the group was being followed by a man that was being mind controlled by an Aboleth and was trying to prevent the party from completing missions for the government. They eventually found the Aboleth in a nest where the Barbaian barely survived by clawing through the body of the Aboleth. Later, when it was just the Barbarian left, he found a small town that had a mayor and a guard in it and the mayor was researching a cemetery nearby along with some lore. The cemetery looked normal, but with a special artifact, it revealed that the cemetery was more of an homage to an evil man named Red Harvest. The rest of the story follows the group as they search for the Cult of Red Harvest.

First DM Attempt

I had everything planned out for this campaign to play out similarly to a Legend of Zelda game with themed dungeons that had items to collect. However, I bit off more than I could chew and as a result I had a party of 8-9 people, one of which had played before and I had to try to run a campaign, which I hadn't done before and then try and teach everyone the rules as best I could. Altogether, it was a daunting experience. Ultimately by session #2, a party member died when he brashly looked into a log where a Formian solder had just entered and the sneak attack critical finished that character right away. General unrest from the players about not being powerful enough at the first level led to the group quickly dissolving to 5-6 people, but since we were all going to college and were only home for the summer, the group stopped playing after 3-4 sessions. The most memorable moment was the bard in the group decided to use Grease under the Formian Queen and then the wizard cast Fireball which ignited the grease lighting the Formian queen on fire and leading quickly to her death.

Small Group Campaign

This campaign started the characters at level 8, which resulted in a Shield-bashing Paladin, a Druid who dabbles with teas that provide aide, and a Warblade/Master of Nine who would love to tell you his tales. This campaign started in Tirumala (not following the lore of Tirumala) in Faerun with the defending of the town against a Storm Elemental. The king dies shortly thereafter leading the party to go to another King to request aid to repair Tirumala so the aide to the King can stand in until the next king can be found. In their attempt to gain assistance to the king they find themselves in the presence of an oracle that offers to have them draw cards from the Deck of Many Things resulting in primarily good things for the party. Upon arriving at the king's palace, they are quickly sent to fight as champions of the Castle of the Rose in exchange for money and supplies for Tirumala. The Paladin decides to explore the town about some missing children rather than participating and leads the group to discover that the king paid an orphanage for children. Upon returning to confront the king, they find that the king is being controlled by a mysterious cloaked figure that has a quicksilver-looking orb. Currently the group is heading back to Tirumala to see what they can do as they are now around for yet another royal death.

Large Group Campaign

This campaign has between 8-10 players depending on the weekend that we play. All characters started as ECL 2 and are in the Forgotten Realms around Suzail. Most players hadn't played before so it's a learning experience primarily. This relatively new campaign has started with 6 members coming to in a cell in a flooded cave. After a confrontation with some Locathah, they find a ceramic map case with some unreadable script on it. After escaping they met up with the rest of the group on the road and they decided, despite some minor confrontation and doubt of each other, that they should continue to Suzail together. They go to the castle after finding that the 6 escaped members were at the King's party and had disappeared after some heavier drinking. The other group that they had met with were invited to the party as well, but didn't make it in time and decided to still pay their respects to the king. They show their map to the King and in exchange for some of their treasure, the King would commission a journey to the map location. They manage to find an underwater temple that was full of traps and undead, but they manage to collect an artifact called that the King's adviser determined to be an artifact that would allow the user to see the true appearance of whatever they looked at. The group heads north after the King informs the party that a group called the "Cult of the Talon" are searching for the body of an old leader and they may have captured the group to pry information from them. In the city where the body is believed to be the party sneaks past load of bandits to reach the temple where the body of the leader is supposed to have laid. After traversing the temple and using the artifact, they reveal that the body is gone and some larger creature has done some damage to the temple. At the end of the last session, one party member climbed to the bell tower and rang a large bronze bell creating a little bit of a stir in the town of primarily bandits.
